Peter Shilton – 125 Caps
Shilton is the record cap holder and his longevity is illustrated by having made his league debut in the 1960s and going on to still be a first-choice goalkeeper at the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy. Winner of the European Cup in 1979 and 1980 with Nottingham Forest, Shilton would go on to play until he was 47, amassing over 1000 league match appearances during a remarkable career.
David Beckham – 115 Caps
A player who needs no introduction due to his iconic status in world football, Beckham was more than just celebrity and glamour as his England appearance record demonstrates. Beckham would recover from the reaction to his sending-off against Argentina in the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France and go on to represent his country for the next 11 years, becoming the most-capped outfield player in the process.
Steven Gerrard – 108 Caps
The current England Captain is sure to have targeted Peter Shilton’s appearance record and will hope to reach this figure in the next year or so as a fine way to celebrate his international career. The Liverpool legend has enjoyed a new lease of life this season and may well be advancing up this list to the very top.
Bobby Moore – 108 Caps
The only Englishman to captain his country to football immortality, Bobby Moore would lift the World Cup in 1966 as England defeated West Germany at Wembley Stadium in the final. His record as the most-capped outfield player, only recently broken by David Beckham, was even more outstanding as he had played every minute of his England appearances. A true legend in name and deed.
Bobby Charlton – 106 Caps
The Manchester United and England legend was part of that famous 1966 World Cup-winning team and won the first of their caps back in 1958, the year he survived the Munich air disaster. He would go on to star for England until 1970, ending his international career as the leading England goal scorer with 49 goals, a record which still stands today.
